Dear everyone, welcome to De Levende Krant. This summer, Het Markttheater takes you out of the daily grind and brings you the latest news from your own neighborhood and the world around it. Because the news affects us all. But how do we ensure that the news offers lightness, relatability, and understanding? All things we need to unfold, question, and challenge the complex reality around us. We bring the newspaper to life, we bring you: De Levende Krant! De Levende Krant is a news show in which (city) news is discussed in a poignant, direct, and hilarious way. Sketches, songs, columns, and cartoons alternate at a high pace, stay close to current events, and differ per neighborhood. Coffee is shared with the neighbor, civil servants, and other guests; the cheesemonger is handed the microphone, and the audience helps decide what the newspaper looks like. Based on an intensive dialogue with the city editorial team—consisting of journalists and local residents—a diverse team of theater makers sheds a critical light on the most current and hidden news stories from the neighborhood and the world beyond.

“De Levende Krant becomes truly interesting when it makes the human consequences of large, often abstract-sounding decisions concrete. A beautiful-sounding plan for a greener street turns out to be disastrous for someone’s work or love life, and even the personal decision of farmer Ayoub to emigrate has consequences for a loyal Instagram fan.” Read more
