Op Straat

A tragicomedy about homelessness. The housing market is creaking at the seams, gentrification is on the rise, and Huib lives in the park. Op straat shows the impact of life without a home. An ode to people living on the streets. Why is there such a huge taboo surrounding homelessness, and why does the government fail to provide everyone with a roof over their head? Op straat was created through the direct presence of Het Markttheater at the market, where there is a lot of interaction with homeless people. The show took shape through interviews with homeless individuals, experts, and partners such as De Regenboog Groep, the Salvation Army, and the Rotterdam-Rijnmond Ombudsman.

(Volkskrant, ★★★★)
‘The story is tinged with a layer of idealism, but relies primarily on humor, which even takes on slapstick forms when a community service officer chases the homeless man. But it is mainly the connections made here, both between the two main characters and between the performers and their audience, that make Op straat an extremely sympathetic and empathetic performance.’ Read more

‘With great pace and humor, the four actors sprint through scenes about Kafkaesque bureaucracy in the Amsterdam housing market and bizarre rules for the homeless. All this is interspersed with thoughtful and cheerful songs. Op straat is a half-hour well spent.’ Read more

‘Op straat is, in the brisk final direction of Fleur van den Berg, a witty and musically strong ode to the outcast.’ Read more
