Trendy coffee shops, concept stores, artists, and ‘new’ residents are moving into old neighborhoods, while long-time residents fear they’ll have to give up their homes because they can no longer afford the skyrocketing costs. Sores in the City is a personal quest into the ups and downs of gentrification. We spoke with Amsterdam residents, housing associations, policymakers, sociologists, and social housing organizations. Can the city remain a place for everyone? Is a city like Amsterdam still a beacon of openness? To what extent does where you live determine who you are and your outlook on life? Does gentrification lead to more equality in the long run, or do cities risk losing their characteristic identity and diversity? Who does the city belong to, and what kind of society do we want to live in? These questions are central to Sores in the City.
