Winkel van Weleer

A masked comedy about the (un)fair sustainability transition and struggling entrepreneurs. A butcher shop on the brink of closure, climate activists armed with superglue, a rock-hard deadline to go green, and flying meatballs and sausages. Winkel van Weleer is satire baked in the tradition of commedia dell’arte. In a world where the transition to a sustainable society demands great sacrifices, Het Markttheater creates a place where everyone can feel addressed—and no one is spared. The actors put on centuries-old Italian masks and bring a performance full of lazzi, physical struggle, and music to the market. Based on interviews with entrepreneurs, civil servants, and environmental organizations, the ensemble and writer Guido Scheepe created a new canavaccio about butcher Mr. van Weleer. Will he manage to survive in times of zero-emission zones and AAA++++ labels, or is his shop a thing of the past?
